Readers of IFO probably know that this blog is run via the good graces of WordPress. We started it years ago – in fact, our fifth anniversary is coming up on Sept. 1 this year. We’ve always been happy with it, though we haven’t mastered all the complexity.
But it seems that WordPress has changed its business model lately. We have been getting emails from young women who have lifestyle and beauty blogs. There’s a certain sameness to those blogs that makes us think they may have more in common than just L & B. Are they run by bots?
The emails to IFO look like form letters saying that these beautiful young women think her blog is “awesome!” Flattered at first, we visited a few of the impressed bloggers professing to love our most recent post. Hmmm. Are they real? Did they actually read it?
Removing our tinfoil hat, we choose to believe these are real bloggers attempting to build traffic on their blogs using a WordPress tool IFO is not familiar with.
We choose this conclusion not just because it makes us feel better (no one wants to be scammed), but if there are real, honest-to-goodness, live, beautiful young women looking at this blog, then, as Herman Cain says on his radio show, “They may just learn something!”
In that spirit, we’re going to address young investors for the next several posts. Clearly, young bloggers are smart and energetic and perhaps even ambitious. If they are ambitious, they may appreciate some straight-from-the-shoulder advice on approaches to investing.
Since IFO has numerous young relatives, she is well aware that they are highly intelligent and don’t need the scare tactics that most advisors use on potential clients. We’ve talked about these people in the past and will skip that step in our coming posts.
We will share our own opinion that investing in individual companies is fun, exciting, exasperating at times, lucrative at times, and satisfying always. The satisfaction comes from the fact that following IFO’s investment model means you will always be learning.
Each lesson learned, whether painful or rewarding, gives deep pleasure. It’s like achieving a four-minute mile. THAT will never happen for IFO! Or learning how to apply makeup like an expert, or like designing and sewing a gorgeous dress, or like baking and decorating a luscious wedding cake, or like learning how to play the guitar like Joe Satriani!
Any time you put great effort into an endeavor and learn something from it, you win. And, we might add, that win is entirely non-taxable!
So, thank you, WordPress. Whatever is causing these laudatory emails, you have given us an idea for a new direction for this blog – YOUTH!
