World’s biggest oil spill in xx years? It’s not what you think.

America had the fastest sailing ships in the world and thus captured much world trade. Above is a copy of a painting entitled “A fast clipper ship sailing before the winde” by Eric Bellis.

Just read somewhere an offhand remark about the world’s biggest oil spill. Do you know which one it was?

Do you know which have been the top 10? Popular Mechanics magazine does:

“10 Biggest Oil Spills in History –No, the 1989 Exxon-Valdez spill doesn’t make the list.” Read more: 10 Biggest Oil Spills in History – Popular Mechanics Follow: @PopMech on Twitter | popularmechanics on Facebook Visit us at PopularMechanics.com

We read about this years ago in the Sailors Union of the Pacific newspaper, the West Coast Sailors” which pointed out how many spills were from ships sailing the infamous “flags of convenience,” hated by unions everywhere.

But reporters still just assume the Exxon-Valdez was it and never check that fact.

So, now you know. Pass it on.
