Most of the people in or near the capital city, Washington DC, are getting nervous. Except for the occasional mean and nasty G-vt actions, like preventing WW II veterans from visiting their memorial park or not paying families of fallen soldiers who have died in Iraq, no one is noticing that the G-vt is shut down.
Now Social Security recipients are being threatened with not getting their checks. We call BS! That is a nearly totally computer-automated process which directly deposits SS checks into bank accounts. We just got ours this month – no problem.
Popularity polls are showing declines for every political person in DC. No one minds having this alleged shutdown. It has become so politicized that anyone who gets on the news as being harmed by some federal bureaucrat is immediately made whole when a bi-partisan vote fixes the problem and shuts off the bad publicity.
Everyone in DC knows this. We may not have to run any more freedom flying posts in just a few days. They know perfectly well that they are becoming irrelevant, in spite of the most earnest efforts of Administration flackery, media sycophancy, and continued financial profligacy. They will all “cave” in a very short time.
Why would that happen? We think it is because the public has finally begun to blame Democrats and the President for all that mean nastiness. Republicans have finally gotten their message out in spite of some Republican backsliders.
Just remember, don’t believe the hype. Please. Our country’s economy will not collapse, the sky will not fall. If those people who seem to desire disaster get their wish, the downturn will be either brief and painless or total and fast.
Either way, get to know your neighbors, think about planting a vegetable and herb garden if you haven’t already, find and become friends with your deity of choice. These are the only things you can count on to get you through whatever may happen.
Investment lesson: hold on tight. Don’t be afraid. Public company stock shares and other assets are the only safe way to store wealth. If that goes, you’ll be able to resort to the recommendations above.
