We are THIS close to . . . freedom!

Politicians are doing something right for a change. If all goes well, the federal govt will shut down in just a few hours. Yay! A few hours of freedom. Treasure them.

You realize the danger they are in? We all just might find out how little we need all of those supposedly vital services.

* Roads? Readers of this blog are well aware that the federal govt does not build roads – that is a city and county job. Only about half of all fed gas taxes collected go to actually building or repairing federal highways and bridges anyway.

Yes, of course, the Interstate Highway system was built using federal gas taxes collected from mostly truckers. But that’s mainly over now. That is why we keep hearing how dangerous our bridges are. That is why the Natl Park Svc is supported with fed gas taxes.

N.B. We were going to fact check that last statement about the National Park Service and went to their website for budget info. Fat chance. After scrolling through several dozen pages in the 540 page document we gave up. You can’t find out where their money comes from. We think fed gas taxes support the NPS and that little, if any, general fund money goes to them. We could be wrong.

Update to N.B. We no longer think fed gas taxes support the NPS. Don’t know where we got that idea, but some of the 6000 earmarks on gas tax funds received by the US Dept of Transportation as described in this 2007 PBS story, might go to the NPS. Who the heck knows?

Anyway, what other services do regular public citizens get from the fed govt?

* Schools? They don’t fund schools (except for around 5% – 10% of total school budgets and then only special programs like bilingual ed and school lunches).

* Phone, electricity, buses, etc., etc. ? Nope. The feds do nothing but use these services to collect taxes from us.

Investor note: IFO does not own stock in companies that receive huge cash payments from the fed govt. Too risky.
