People, especially doom-and-gloomers are convinced we are swimming in a sea of inflation.
It’s true things are really expensive over here in CH, but I’m finding some wiggle room on prices is developing. It’s very subtle – no shouting in a bazaar, but some prices for services have come way down.
The fiction that CH is different and growing moderately may soon melt away. There are office, retail store and apartment vacancies everywhere.
Worldwide, however, commodity prices are going down. Gold just dropped below $1700. Oil just went below $88!!! The U.S. is putting pressure on CH banks and all those banks do is turn their backs on us.
Now CH will be fine. Watching all the maintenance, both public and private, that is going on and has done so for many decades, watching the reasonable tax situation and best of all, watching the voters turning down govt requests for tax increases … I’d say Switzerland will do just fine.
They may not be letting foreigners in any more though. Most of their crime is committed by said foreigners – esp. North Africans and Eastern Europeans.
The former foreigners – the Italians are beloved by all and most are citizens. Turns out most were Northern Italians, more like the Swiss than say, oh, Sicilians.
One of my favorite series of books these days is by Donna Leon, an American living in Venice and writing crime novels. Her hero is Police Commissioner Guido Brunetti. He’s often caught thinking anti-southern Italian thoughts.
BTW, remember a few posts ago when I referred to books as “my drug of choice?” More true than I realized. I’ve been on a non-stop binge, even while attending concerts, walking several miles a day, even in snow and rain, and eating my own delicious cooking.
