Yesterday, I went downtown for some groceries. Even though I get my eggs from my neighbor, my Italian olive oil from Fanucchi’s Oil, my fish from the place practically hidden behind the Newberg Historic Chapel and Event Center, and most of my groceries at Nap’s, the locally-owned and operated Thriftway store, I’m still on the lookout for other cool, local foods.
Now, I have found a place to get fresh-made, on-the-spot tortillas! If you never have eaten fresh-made tortillas, you haven’t lived. Juan and Mariela Sanchez, proprietors of El Burrito Foods in downtown, central Newberg (508 E. First St. #2)have both graciously consented to make some for me. They hand them over while still warm.
With the economy in its present state, we recommend that you run, don’t walk, down to El Burrito and get yourself some homemade tortillas. I’m still covering business and industry for The Sun, and while things have stabilized for a bit, one never knows what the future will bring.
