Top searches today on the Web aren’t for the usual celebrities. Newark mayor Cory Booker and Ann Romney are at the top of Google’s searches. These are both great people, heroes, with not a whiff of scandal or salaciousness about them and their stories. This raises our opinion of Internet users. North Korea and Tax Day are in there, too. Serious, thought provoking. Maybe it’s just Friday, the 13th.
Oh, wait – on Yahoo the top topics are full of celebrities, but there’s also weather (hail storms), foreclosures and fertility treatment – not quite as top-drawer as Google, but still fairly serious.
Foreclosure news, by the way, is totally confusing. The numbers of new filings to up, then down, then up again. Each time the explanation makes even less sense. However, in general the more foreclosures go through and depreciated houses sold, the sooner our days of economic discontent will be over. Of course, we’ll have some new discontent to cry about by then – Euro crisis anyone?
A few brief grammar rants: will people PLEASE stop saying it is the “single most…” whatever. It is either the most or it isn’t. There is NO justification for that construction.
Also – “Give back.” STOP! We know what they mean, but those words don’t mean what they intend them to mean. Usually it is teenagers who want to do something for the Poor, or some other disadvantaged group of people. They organize a food donation effort or something and not only feel good about themselves, but increase their chances of getting into college. This is private social service, or service to others, not “giving back.”
For people who haven’t thought about those words, recall that after you have received something, you can give it back. Like a baseball. Or the teacher sees a kid snatching a toy from a kid and says sternly, “give it back.” Or, if you are in a union and grant concessions to management, that is a “giveback.”
Now the term is right up there with “sustainability” for being a catchall word for doing good in a PC way – you know, Green and all that.
