This article is scarcely worth comment. The picture alone is a joke, but the content is worse. What’s the first thing you think about when you think about tourism?
Horrible traffic? Petty crime? Drunk college students staggering around town? Crowds of confused travelers with screaming kids in the car? Scarce affordable housing? And about those jobs – you know, those one million jobs: mostly low-paid work for maids, janitors, pool boys, doormen, etc.?
Tourist attractions located in third-world countries with presidents-for-life or kings? With the business owners living somewhere else beside the tourist mecca? And the corporations based in some other state or country? Yep. IFO thinks of that and more.
Promoting tourism as an economic growth strategy is beyond foolish – it’s evil.
DDH said, “We can’t build wealth taking in each other’s laundry.” IOW, services are nice, but unless they are directly tied to natural resource production, wealth is consumed, not created.
