This news isn’t really new or even unusual, but it is an especially egregious example of rogue bureaucrats showing their muscle.
This is about the Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) case. A NYT article goes into detail about how he was railroaded out of office by the U.S. Justice Department.
This is not a partisan issue, it is a rogue federal agency issue. Here are some items that a federal judge has released:
The judge quoted Mr. Schuelke [federal investigator] as saying that the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Stevens had been “permeated by the systematic concealment of significant exculpatory evidence which would have independently corroborated his defense and his testimony, and seriously damaged the testimony and credibility of the government’s key witness.”
Mr. Schuelke and Mr. Shields also “found evidence of concealment and serious misconduct that was previously unknown and almost certainly would never have been revealed — at least to the court and to the public — but for their exhaustive investigation.”
IOW, they lied about Sen. Stevens, who was innocent of the charges brought against him. In 2009, an FBI agent blew the whistle on the withheld evidence and the case was thrown out, AFTER he lost his bid for re-election in 2008. In 2010, Sen. Stevens died in a plane crash.
Don’t worry though. NO ONE WILL BE PUNISHED. Why? Because the judge in the case “did not issue an order specifically instructing prosecutors to obey the law by turning over any exculpatory evidence.”
Investment lesson? Don’t count on the courts or government regulators to protect you and your investments. Only the personal integrity of the people you are dealing with will do that.
