Food fun, cooking classes and charitable contributions

Sample Gingerbread House

McMinnville residents can check out Friends of the McMinnville Library to pick up bags of Gingerbread House parts to build their own holiday houses.

Red Fox Bakery is spearheading the making and baking of the walls and roofs tomorrow, so the bags of goodies should be ready next week. It’s not quite a cooking class, but there is much to learn. Another cooking class will be in December, when members of McMinnville Bakers Dozen will learn how to make Christmas Stollen. Yum!

The last two months of the year are busier than the other 10 combined. Holidays, gifts, parties, taxes… Yes, taxes. Also, for seniors, RMDs, required minimum distributions from your regular IRA. You have to take the money, whether you want it or not. Sounds like a Monty Python skit, doesn’t it? You didn’t think it was YOUR IRA, did you?

Since we are forced by our benevolent federal government to take a certain amount of money out of our accounts, IFO has decided to give it all away as a charitable contribution, thus denying the greedy government additional tax revenues, while feeling all superior and Lady Bountiful-like.

We’ll donate to the Portland Opera, the Linus Pauling Institute, the J and the local historical society, making the hard-working volunteers and staff members at those institutions happy.

BTW, the opera has perks for larger donors that make the gift worthwhile. There’s a little, almost secret, snack room that features really cool little num-nums and glasses of wine. Opera goers with access can visit the room between the opera acts. Everybody knows why they and the other people are there – making us all feel really important. Them what has gets, my friends, even if what one has isn’t that much. This is a world we just discovered last year. Oh, we also get free parking and free coat check.

Investment lesson 1: learn and take part in what’s going on in your community so you can save on taxes and have a good time, too.

Investment lesson 2: only donate to organizations that you know personally. It’s more satisfying and safer, because you will see and enjoy the fruits of your donations.
