Interactive maps on U.S. economy

Sometimes a picture is worth way more than a 1000 words. Pictures illuminate and elucidate complex patterns. What is interesting is the colors the map makers chose to make their points.

The first map is on Job Growth throughout the U.S. Blue stands for losing jobs, red for gaining jobs.

Below is a map from RealtyTrac on foreclosure actions, one of several on the Portland Housing Blog, which they picked up from one of my favorite blogs, Dr. Housing Bubble. See how the heat map tracks the job growth map:

From this we conclude, among other things, that the job picture won’t get any better until the housing picture improves. The federal government can’t do anything about this except get out of the way as the banks disgorge themselves of the toxic mortgages poisoning their balance sheets and our economy.
