Do you like your job?

That’s not an idle question. Years ago we wrote many ‘career’ stories for a wonderful publication for high school and community college students called Vocational Biographies.

We had a fixed format to write to so that there would be consistency of information for the readers. We found people working at all kinds of jobs from very blue collar to management. One thing that struck us as we asked the question: what do you like most about your job? Most answered: The variety! It’s different every day!

This experience came back to us during a long conversation we had yesterday with a former neighbor. Not to put too fine a point on it, his life was pretty much a mess. He and his Mother loved gambling, he has had too many girlfriends to count, has declared bankruptcy at least twice (this info shared with a sheepish smile), and lost two houses to foreclosure in two states.

He got his mortgages and re-fis from Countrywide. Need we say more? See this final post from

Imagine our surprise when he described the joys and challenges of his job running a warehouse for a huge cafeteria. This required careful ordering and frequent inventorying. He has 11 interns to do most of the actual counting, but he does the managing and calculating. “I love my job!” he said, with innocent enthusiasm.

If this man could find and keep a job he loves, why do we have 10+ percent unemployment?
